What is the Technical Intern Training System?
The objective of the “Program of Technical Intern Training for Foreign Nationals” is to have workers from other
countries acquire the skills, etc., relating to Japanese industry, and for them to take advantage of the skills, etc.,
that they have acquired after their return to their home country, and to play an active role in the development of the industries of their home countries.
The system is offered in both a single-enterprise format, and a format managed by Japanese Supervising Organization.
In each of the two formats, activities performed by technical interns are divided into six categories: those conducted in the first year after immigrating to Japan, designed to acquire technical skills; and those conducted in the second & third years, designed to master those skills, and in the fourth and fifth years, aimed to try out the skill.
Regarding trainees’ visa status: For the single-business model, for the first year, trainees will have a Technical Intern Training 1-i visa; for the second and third years, trainees will have a Technical Intern Training 2-i visa, for the fourth and fifth years, trainees will have a Technical Intern Training 3-i visa.
In the organization-managed model, trainees will have a Technical Intern Training 1-ro visa; for the second and third years, trainees will have a Technical Training 2-ro visa, for the fourth and fifth years, trainees will have a Technical Intern Training 3-ro visa.
Technical interns may transfer from a Technical Intern 1 visa to a Technical Intern 2 visa if they pass the Grade 3 Trade Skill Test on their (*post-transfer) occupation & duties and receive permission for a change in visa status, and from a Technical Intern 2 visa to a Technical Intern 3 visa if they pass the Grade 2 Trade Skill Test on their (*post-transfer) occupation & duties and receive permission for a change in visa status.
